A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel in the town following a reported encounter with a 21-year-old woman.

The incident occurred on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the lecturer later sent Jacob out to purchase water. When she returned, she reportedly found him unresponsive on the bed.

The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm.

Ikoedem said three people had been arrested in connection with the case. Those in custody are the hotel owner, the manager and Jacob.

She said the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death were still being investigated.

The police spokesperson added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

The university also confirmed Uwuigbe’s death. However, its Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the incident took place outside the institution and was unrelated to the university’s activities.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Aladenika said.

He added that Jacob was not a student of the university and that the incident occurred outside the university premises.

Police investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances and cause of the lecturer’s death.
