A Nigerian lecturer at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, Dr Ayodele Odularu, has been found dead at her residence in the Eastern Cape Province.
Odularu, 51, died on August 16, according to her brother, Gbadebo Odularu, who spoke with *Punch’s* Diaspora Tales on Wednesday.
A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the family had concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death and believed it required further investigation.
The family has called for an investigation to establish what happened.
In a GoFundMe statement issued by Gbadebo on behalf of the family, Odularu was described as a scholar and mentor who devoted her career to research, education and community development.
“Ayodele was far more than a sister. She was a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor, scholar, and a source of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and strength to everyone blessed to know her,” the family said.
The statement added that Odularu was known for her kindness, generosity and commitment to supporting others.
It also described her as an independent senior researcher associated with the University of Fort Hare community, where she contributed to academic research and scholarship.
The University of Fort Hare held a memorial service in her honour on Thursday.
Odularu’s death comes amid concerns over attacks targeting Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.
Since June, the Nigerian government has facilitated the evacuation of 1,716 Nigerians from South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks, according to the report.
The circumstances surrounding Odularu’s death remain unclear, while her family continues to seek an investigation.
