Plateau State referee Aweng Solomon Maram has died after collapsing during a pre-season fitness test at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Maram reportedly collapsed during the running segment of the test on Tuesday and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The fitness assessment was organised by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Referees Development Unit as part of preparations for the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The Plateau State Referees Council confirmed Maram’s death in an obituary notice, describing his passing as a major loss to the refereeing community.

The council expressed condolences to Maram’s family, friends and colleagues.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family and the council in due course.
