Nigerian medical graduate Nnani Adaobi Merian has died from injuries she sustained during a Russian strike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

Merian, 23, was injured when Russian forces shelled the city on June 29. She was initially treated in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for further medical care, where she later died.

Her death was announced on Sunday by Kharkiv National Medical University in a statement posted on Facebook.

The university said Merian suffered severe injuries in the attack and remained under intensive medical care in Ukraine and later in Germany.

"Doctors fought for her life until the very end—first in Kharkiv and later in Germany," the university said. "Despite every effort, she could not be saved."

Merian enrolled at Kharkiv National Medical University in 2020. The institution described her as a dedicated and disciplined student who consistently achieved strong academic results throughout her studies.

Her death adds to the growing number of civilian casualties linked to Russia's ongoing military campaign in Ukraine, which has continued to affect residents, international students and foreign nationals living in the country.
