Western Digital says it has integrated post-quantum cryptography into its newest high-capacity Ultrastar UltraSMR hard drives, presenting the move as part of next-generation trusted infrastructure for the AI data economy.

The announcement reflects a growing enterprise concern: data being stored today may still need protection when powerful quantum computers arrive. If encryption systems are not upgraded in time, sensitive archived information could be vulnerable to future decryption attacks.

Storage is now a security frontier

AI has made data storage more strategically important. Training data, customer records, surveillance footage, backups and enterprise archives are all expanding rapidly. Protecting that information requires more than firewalls. It also requires cryptography and hardware design that can survive a longer threat horizon.

Post-quantum cryptography is becoming a board-level issue because migration takes years. Companies must identify vulnerable systems, upgrade software, test hardware compatibility and maintain crypto-agility. Western Digital's move shows that storage vendors are beginning to build that future into the hardware layer.
