A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced 37-year-old Zakaria Garba to death by hanging for his role in the 2014 Nyanya motor park bombing that killed more than 70 people and injured several others.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment during the latest round of terrorism trials conducted by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Garba, who pleaded guilty to all five counts filed against him by the Federal Government, was convicted and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment each on counts one and two, life imprisonment on count three, and death by hanging on counts four and five.

After delivering the sentence, Justice Omotosho told the convict, "May God have mercy on you."

According to the charges filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Garba and other suspects still at large conspired to plan and execute the bombing at Nyanya Motor Park in Abuja in 2014 using explosive devices.

The attack claimed more than 70 lives and left many others with varying degrees of injuries.

The prosecution also accused Garba of intentionally causing the explosion with the aim of killing and inflicting serious bodily harm on members of the public. He was further convicted for participating in the terrorist act that led to the mass casualties.

The offences were prosecuted under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Garba's case, marked **FHC/KNJ/CR/985/2026**, was among several terrorism cases concluded during the latest phase of the Federal High Court's mass trials.

The court also sentenced other defendants who pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences.

Ali Mohammed received 25 years imprisonment on one count and 15 years on another in case **FHC/KNJ/CR/1020/2026**.

Isa Saleh was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on a single terrorism charge in case **FHC/KNJ/CR/973/2026**, while Tujan Mohammed was also jailed for 20 years in case **FHC/KNJ/CR/954/2026**.

In a separate case, Salisu Bala was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on one count but was discharged and acquitted on two other counts.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who led the prosecution team, said the Federal Government remains committed to tackling terrorism across the country.

"We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe haven for everybody," Fagbemi said.
