The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Osa Director, says the party has introduced stricter screening procedures to stop aspirants from leveraging the popularity of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso for political gain.
He spoke on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s *Sunrise Daily*.
Director said the party reviewed its internal processes after observing patterns from the 2023 election cycle, where several relatively unknown politicians gained access to party platforms and later secured nominations.
He noted that the NDC is now paying closer attention to individuals seeking its tickets, especially those with limited or no prior involvement in partisan politics, including some applicants from outside the country.
According to him, the party views itself as an emerging alternative in a politically competitive environment and is therefore tightening its entry requirements.
He explained that during screening sessions, aspirants were required to clearly state their political background, intentions, and understanding of the party’s direction. He added that visibility and grassroots engagement remain key expectations for anyone seeking elective office under the platform.
“If you are not active on the ground, it raises questions about your ability to earn votes,” he said.
Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, and Kwankwaso, the NNPP presidential candidate, both attracted significant political movements that election cycle. Several candidates who emerged under those parties later switched allegiance after the polls.
Director said the NDC intends to avoid a repeat of that pattern by strengthening vetting standards.
He stated that future candidates must demonstrate clear political history and alignment with the party’s principles before being cleared to contest.
“The process will not be routine. We are assessing background, commitment, and consistency with our values. Without that, a ticket will not be granted,” he said.
