Ten people have been convicted and sentenced for abusing the naira by spraying banknotes at social events in Delta and Edo states, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said.
In a statement issued on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale identified the convicts as Lucky Onoberhie, Happy Joseph Isioma, Friday Ehiedu, Collins Ndudi Albert, Okorie Builder, Ernest Achieme, Isicheli Desmond Chijioke, Nwosu Davison, Enadegh Agbonmware and Lucky Osaro.
According to the EFCC, the defendants were prosecuted for spraying naira notes while dancing at parties, an act that violates Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
One of the charges stated that Ernest Achieme tampered with N50,000 in N200 notes by spraying the money while dancing at a wedding ceremony in Kwale on December 31, 2025.
The commission said all 10 defendants pleaded guilty to the charges.
Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court in Asaba convicted Onoberhie, Isioma, Ehiedu, Albert, Builder, Achieme, Chijioke and Davison, sentencing each to 12 months' imprisonment with an option of a N100,000 fine.
In a separate ruling, Justice C. A. Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Benin convicted Agbonmware and sentenced him to six months' imprisonment or a N100,000 fine for spraying the naira.
Osaro also received a six-month jail term with an option of a N100,000 fine after being convicted for the same offence.
