The Obidient Movement has strongly criticised former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, over his recent comments questioning the patriotism of Peter Obi, declaring that the former governor lacks the moral authority to make such claims.
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Directorate, the movement accused Sheriff of sidestepping critical questions about the performance of President Bola Tinubu during a recent appearance on Channels Television.
According to the group, Sheriff chose to dwell on issues surrounding the Nigerian Civil War and Peter Obi instead of addressing pressing national concerns.
"Rather than address the pressing issues of insecurity, economic hardship, inflation and the rising cost of living confronting Nigerians, Ali Modu Sheriff chose to divert attention by making unfounded remarks about Peter Obi," the statement said.
The movement maintained that national conversations should be centred on governance and practical solutions to the country's challenges rather than political distractions.
It also defended Obi's record, arguing that he has consistently demonstrated a commitment to national unity through his investments and engagements across different regions, ethnic and religious groups.
"Peter Obi's actions over the years have reflected his belief in one united Nigeria. His investments and business relationships cut across every region, ethnicity and religion, demonstrating his commitment to inclusive national development," the statement added.
The group cited Obi's support for Umza Rice during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank as an example of his willingness to support businesses outside his region. It also noted that Obi has repeatedly spoken about unlocking the agricultural potential of northern Nigeria to stimulate economic growth, create jobs and diversify the country's revenue base.
Rejecting claims that Obi is not committed to Nigeria's unity, the movement said the former Anambra State governor has consistently advocated dialogue, justice and inclusion as the most effective ways of addressing insecurity and national grievances.
The statement further questioned Sheriff's moral standing to criticise Obi.
"Ali Modu Sheriff has no moral authority to question Peter Obi's patriotism or commitment to national development. Nigerians deserve leaders who will focus on solving the country's problems, not creating distractions," the movement stated.
The Obidient Movement urged Nigerians to remain focused on issues of governance, accountability and policies capable of improving the country's economic and security situation.
The latest exchange comes amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters of leading political figures intensifying debates over leadership, national unity and governance.
