Unidentified gunmen have killed popular comedian and media personality Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza Nwosu, and another man in separate attacks in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The two incidents occurred on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo and Capital City Road in Amaenyi.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the killings on Monday, saying three unidentified men travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were suspected of carrying out the attacks.
According to the police, the registration number of the vehicle was not immediately known.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said police operatives were deployed to the affected areas after receiving distress calls and had launched a manhunt for the suspects.
He said the bodies of the victims were recovered from separate locations and taken to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
While one of the victims had not been identified, the police identified the other as Isaac Nwosu, also known as “Azia.”
An eyewitness said the gunmen appeared to have followed Nwosu from his residence before attacking him.
According to the witness, the suspects, believed to be about three in number, drove a tinted vehicle, blocked Nwosu’s vehicle and shot him. He was reportedly found dead inside his car.
The witness further alleged that the attackers later drove to another location, where they shot a second man by the roadside and took his belongings before fleeing.
The shootings reportedly caused panic among residents, with the suspects said to have fired shots into the air as they left the area.
Security operatives later arrived at the scenes and recovered the bodies, while security presence was increased in the affected areas.
Police said items recovered from the scenes included ₦7,550 in cash, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers.
The motive for the killings had not been established as of Monday. However, some residents and eyewitnesses suspected that the attacks could be linked to cult-related activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the killings and described them as unacceptable.
He ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a detailed investigation.
The commissioner also directed security operatives to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring communities.
The police urged residents, community leaders, motorists and business owners who witnessed the attacks or have information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to contact the authorities.
The command assured members of the public that information provided would be treated confidentially.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said cooperation between security agencies and residents remained important to identifying and arresting those responsible for the killings.
