The Oyo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of 24-year-old Sefiu Kehinde, who was allegedly attacked by a masquerader during a procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Police said the report was filed by Mrs Aderemi, who told officers she received a distress call from her elder sister around 4:00 p.m. informing her that a masquerader identified as Asoleke and some of his followers had attacked her younger brother.

The police alleged that the victim was assaulted with axes and cutlasses, leaving him with severe injuries.

Kehinde was rushed to a hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead on arrival by the attending doctor.

Officers visited the scene, documented the incident, and took photographs as part of the investigation. The deceased's family later obtained police approval to bury his body in line with Islamic rites.

The police said the masquerader identified as Asoleke has been arrested, while four other suspects believed to have taken part in the attack remain at large.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
