Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says Peter Obi has signed an agreement to serve only one term if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure on Monday while appearing on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, saying the agreement formed part of the understanding behind their political alliance ahead of the election.
He said he believes Obi will keep to the arrangement, describing him as a politician who is committed to Nigeria’s development.
“I personally believe him. Based on what I now know about him, I don’t think he will renege. I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” Kwankwaso said.
The former Kano governor said the agreement was for the presidency to return to the North after their proposed four-year tenure.
“We will work together as a group, as a party, as friends, brothers and so on, and involve everybody to work together so that after our term of four years in 2031, then it (presidency) comes back to the north. That is the general agreement,” he said.
Kwankwaso said his perception of Obi changed after the 2023 presidential election, adding that he now sees the former Anambra governor as a reliable political partner.
“I now know that Peter is a very serious politician; he has this country in mind. He is someone to be relied on,” he said.
He added that discussions between both camps showed they shared similar ideas about Nigeria’s future.
“When we compared our blueprints, mine and his, we realised that we have a similar vision and mission for the country. That was why it was very easy for us to agree to work together as a family,” Kwankwaso said.
Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has previously stated that he would serve for one term if elected president in 2027.
He has said the decision is based on his commitment to political balance and the rotation of power between regions, arguing that a single term would allow the presidency to return to the North in 2031.
