The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Ibekwe, over the alleged murder of 23-year-old nursing student Vivian Chilaka in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued in Awka on Saturday.
Chilaka was killed on June 14, an incident that triggered public concern in the community.
According to Ikenga, Ibekwe was arrested on September 4 following information described by the command as credible and actionable.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly entered the building by climbing over the fence with a ladder. Police said his initial intention was to sexually assault Chilaka.
The statement said a struggle followed between the suspect and the student, during which he allegedly stabbed her with a knife, resulting in her death.
Police also said Ibekwe had allegedly confessed to involvement in other crimes in the community. The claims, however, are still being investigated and will require further corroboration.
The command also clarified that Chilaka’s landlord, who had earlier been questioned in connection with the case, has been exonerated.
Police urged members of the public to disregard earlier suspicions against the landlord.
Ikenga said Ibekwe remained in police custody as investigators continued to examine his alleged involvement in the murder and other related criminal activities.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Nnanna Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation and for providing information that assisted the investigation.
The command said it would continue to pursue credible leads and take appropriate legal action against anyone found responsible for the killing.
