The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has begun enforcement against vehicles using illegal tinted glass, concealed number plates, and improper registration, in a move aimed at reducing crime in the territory.
Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, announced the operation on Friday in Abuja, saying it responds to rising security concerns linked to the use of such vehicles in criminal activity.
According to him, intelligence reports show that offenders frequently rely on vehicles with tinted windows and hidden plates to carry out offences such as “one-chance” robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, while avoiding identification by security operatives.
He said the enforcement is part of a wider strategy to disrupt these patterns.
More than 30 vehicles have already been impounded since the exercise began, the police command confirmed. The affected vehicles were found to be in violation of regulations covering tinted glass, plate visibility, or valid registration.
Sanusi stated that the operation is not directed at motorists who have lawful approval for tinted windows, but at those using vehicles to bypass security checks and conceal criminal activity.
He added that owners and operators of impounded vehicles will be prosecuted under relevant federal laws and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.
The police command said the operation will continue across Abuja, alongside intelligence-led policing efforts aimed at preventing crime rather than reacting to it.
Residents were urged to remain alert and report suspicious vehicles or activities to security agencies through designated channels.
