Goncalo Ramos scored deep into stoppage time as Portugal came from behind to defeat Croatia 2-1 in a dramatic 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash.
Croatia took the lead shortly after the restart through Ivan Perisic, who finished at the far post after a well-worked move involving Nikola Vlasic and Josip Stanisic.
The Croatians thought they had doubled their advantage moments later when Igor Matanovic found the net from another Vlasic delivery, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Portugal responded with greater urgency, although Cristiano Ronaldo initially had a goal disallowed for offside.
The equaliser eventually came from the penalty spot after Renato Veiga was brought down by Vlasic during a corner. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, and Ronaldo converted to score his third goal of the tournament and his 11th FIFA World Cup goal.
Croatia continued to threaten in search of another goal. Mateo Kovacic forced two fine saves from Diogo Costa, including one that pushed his long-range strike onto the post, while Matanovic was also denied by the Portugal goalkeeper. Petar Sucic later found the net, but the assistant referee's flag once again denied Croatia for offside.
With extra time looming, Portugal struck the decisive blow. Rafael Leao delivered a cross into the box in the fourth minute of added time, and Ramos rose highest to head home the winner.
Croatia believed they had rescued the match moments later when Josko Gvardiol tapped in from Mario Pasalic's pass. However, a VAR review confirmed Pasalic had been offside in the build-up, and the goal was disallowed.
The result sends Portugal into the quarter-finals, where Roberto Martinez's side will face Spain in Dallas on 6 July.
