Tinubu travelled for a three-week vacation but did not return as initially expected on Monday. His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, later said the President had extended his stay by a few days.
The President’s absence has sparked questions from opposition figures and other Nigerians seeking clarification about his whereabouts.
In a statement on Sunday, Onanuga said Tinubu did not need to be physically present in Abuja to perform his duties.
“Nigeria’s President is hale and hearty. He has been on a working vacation, which he is perfectly entitled to,” Onanuga said.
He added that Tinubu had continued to work during his trip, including meetings with investors in France.
Onanuga also said the President had recently facilitated a proposed $7 billion deep-sea port project in Ogun Waterside, an initiative of the Ogun State Government.
Addressing Tinubu’s absence from the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Onanuga noted that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi were also absent from the gathering.
The Presidency had earlier announced that Tinubu would be away on his annual vacation, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing Nigeria at the UN General Assembly.
Onanuga also criticised Peter Obi for questioning Tinubu’s whereabouts, arguing that the President had publicly announced his vacation plans.
The Presidential spokesman said Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this week to participate in activities marking the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary and attend the Lagos premiere of a film commemorating the life and legacy of the late businessman and politician, MKO Abiola.
