Engr Eric Anyamene has secured a resounding victory in the NDC primary election for Idemili North and Idemili South Federal Constituency, defeating the incumbent lawmaker, Hon Harris Okonkwo, in what many party members have described as a major political upset.
The primary election, which adopted the Option A4 voting method, witnessed a massive turnout of delegates and party faithful from across the constituency. Videos obtained by our correspondent showed long queues of voters openly lining up behind the poster of Engr Anyamene, while supporters enthusiastically chanted his name throughout the exercise.
The atmosphere became even more electric after electoral officials announced Engr Anyamene as the winner. Jubilant supporters immediately lifted him on their shoulders, singing and celebrating what they described as a victory for the grassroots.
The outcome is particularly significant as it marks the defeat of a sitting member of the House of Representatives seeking another term. Political observers say the result reflects the mood of party members and their desire for a new direction in the constituency.
Addressing supporters after his victory, Engr Anyamene expressed gratitude to party members for the confidence reposed in him and thanked the party's presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, for his leadership.
"This victory belongs to all of us," he said. "I thank Mr Peter Obi for his leadership and inspiration. Today, our people have chosen competence, vision, capacity, accountability and transparency."
He further assured supporters that he would justify the trust placed in him and work towards advancing the interests of the constituency.
In a statement that drew loud cheers from the crowd, he declared that "Idemili and Nigeria will be OK," a remark supporters interpreted as a message of hope and a reaffirmation of the party's ideals.
For many observers, the primary election demonstrated that party members were determined to make their voices heard. Despite the advantages often associated with incumbency, delegates overwhelmingly rallied behind Engr Anyamene, handing him a decisive victory over the sitting lawmaker.
As of press time, party members and supporters are eagerly awaiting the party's official announcement confirming Engr Eric Anyamene as the winner of the primary election.
