No fewer than 10 people were killed and six others injured in a road crash involving an 18-seater commercial bus and a truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident occurred at about 8:05 p.m. near Sapade Bridge in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to the FRSC, the crash involved a white Sinotruk truck bearing a Dangote inscription and a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with Lagos registration number EKY 290 YM.

The FRSC Public Education Officer in Ogun State, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, said the bus, which was conveying 18 passengers, crashed into the truck after its driver allegedly reversed on the highway after missing his route.

He said preliminary findings indicated that speed violation, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving contributed to the crash.

The deceased comprised nine adult men and one male child, while the injured included four adult men and two women. Two other adult men escaped unhurt.

FRSC rescue operatives evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ishara Division took custody of the vehicles involved, while arrangements were made to clear the wreckage from the highway.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

He also cautioned motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, against reversing on highways, speeding, dangerous driving and other traffic violations. Ogunjobi urged road users to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes to reduce the risk of avoidable crashes.
