Cleric and Convener of the Initiative for a Better and Brighter Nigeria, Isa El-Buba, has declared support for Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential aspirant, Adewole Adebayo, ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the party leader is better placed to address Nigeria’s current challenges.

El-Buba, who backed the presidential bid of Peter Obi in the 2023 election, said his new position reflects a reassessment of Nigeria’s political direction and the need for a stronger opposition platform going into 2027.

Speaking at an SDP event in Abuja, he praised the conduct of the meeting and urged party members to remain united as they prepare for the next electoral cycle.

He said Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and inequality remain evidence of deep governance failure that requires urgent correction.

“Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources, intelligent people and great potential, yet millions still suffer from insecurity, unemployment, poverty and injustice,” he said.

El-Buba said the country’s current situation demands deliberate action and a coordinated effort to rebuild public trust in leadership.

He warned against political arrangements that could reduce democratic competition, insisting that no stable society can exist without fairness and equity.

“Nigeria cannot become a one-party state. Every system survives on justice and equity,” he said.

The cleric also confirmed that his movement would mobilise support for Adebayo’s 2027 ambition, describing him as part of a wider effort to reposition national leadership.

He criticised vote-buying and political inducement, saying Nigerians are increasingly resistant to financial influence during elections.

“Nobody will buy the conscience of Nigerians with money or a bag of rice,” he said.

El-Buba expressed confidence that the political climate ahead of 2027 could produce what he called a more accountable and purposeful leadership direction for the country.
