Prof. Christopher Imumolen, the presidential candidate of a faction of the Accord Party, has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential election and endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Imumolen, who also serves as the factional National Chairman of the party, announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the move followed consultations with the party’s leadership.
According to him, stepping down was a decision made in what he described as the national interest, placing unity, stability and development above personal political ambition.
Imumolen said his endorsement of Tinubu was based on the President’s reform agenda, which he said aligns with key areas of his own manifesto, including economic transformation, education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, industrialisation and national development.
He also praised Tinubu’s leadership, saying the President had demonstrated resilience in managing Nigeria’s political and economic challenges, while showing the capacity to build consensus, identify capable leaders and make difficult decisions.
Imumolen argued that continuity in leadership would support ongoing reforms and provide a bridge between Nigeria’s current democratic leadership and a new generation of political leaders.
Despite the country's economic challenges, he expressed confidence that Tinubu’s policies and fiscal reforms would strengthen the economy and deliver long-term growth.
The endorsement adds to the list of political figures backing Tinubu’s bid for a second term ahead of the 2027 general election.
