Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said he will resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if President Bola Tinubu disrespects opposition parties or the Catholic Church.
Kalu made the statement while appearing on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, where he defended Tinubu’s approach to political opponents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Abia State governor said Nigerians should not expect the President to give the opposition preferential treatment, arguing that political rivals cannot be treated as allies.
“Will you just lay red carpet for the opposition to come and be dancing around if you are a politician?” Kalu asked.
He said Tinubu had been fair to opposition figures and had not deliberately targeted anyone, adding that adherence to the law remains the key standard for everyone in the country.
“Tinubu is fair to them, he has not touched any of them unknowingly. The law of the land is very straightforward, and if you respect the law of the land you will be well in the country,” he said.
Kalu explained that Tinubu’s position was that the opposition would not receive special privileges while political competition continues.
“If I’m your enemy, will you give me a red carpet? If I’m fighting with you, will you give me red carpet?” he said.
The senator, who described himself as a fair-minded person, said he supported a free and credible electoral process and would leave the APC if Tinubu acted against democratic principles.
“Any day Tinubu disrespects the opposition or Catholic Church, I will resign from the APC,” Kalu stated.
