The Anambra State Police Command has taken a serving officer into custody following an incident in Okija that resulted in the death of a three-month-old baby.

The Command confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to establish what led to the event and determine accountability.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the officer in question has been identified and is currently being questioned as part of both disciplinary and investigative procedures within the Nigeria Police Force.

Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, described the development as distressing and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family. He also assured that the Command would handle the case transparently and in line with professional standards.

The statement further noted that authorities are working to clarify the circumstances and ensure that anyone found responsible is subject to the law.

Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tensions in the community.

A preliminary account from a source suggested the incident stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute in which police were invited to intervene. It was alleged that during the encounter, an attempt to strike a relative of the tenant missed and instead hit the infant, who later died from the injury. The account remains unverified and is part of ongoing inquiries.

The Command said updates will be released as the investigation continues.
