Police in Enugu State have arrested a woman accused of forcing her young niece to eat human faeces in Ugwuoba, Oji River Local Government Area.
The incident has sparked outrage within the community and on social media, with residents calling for justice and stronger protection for children.
According to community sources, the child was allegedly subjected to repeated abuse while living with her aunt. The matter came to public attention after residents confronted the suspect and escorted her through the community in protest. Videos of the incident have since circulated online.
A resident said police officers in the area have taken the suspect into custody and that family members, including the child's parents, have been interviewed by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
Community members described the allegation as disturbing and said local women mobilised to draw attention to the case and demand legal action.
The Enugu State Police Command has reportedly commenced an investigation. However, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said he was not aware of the incident when contacted.
Human rights advocates have called for immediate medical and psychological support for the child, as well as a thorough investigation and prosecution if the allegations are confirmed.
Legal experts note that forcing a child to consume human faeces may constitute child abuse, assault, and inhuman and degrading treatment under Nigerian law and the Child Rights Law of Enugu State.
The incident has renewed concerns over child abuse in Nigeria despite existing child protection laws. Rights groups continue to urge authorities to strengthen enforcement measures, encourage early reporting of abuse, and provide support services for victims.
