Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected assertions that President Bola Tinubu was responsible for bringing the late former President Muhammadu Buhari to power in 2015, saying he played the leading role in the electoral victory.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, Amaechi said he was directly involved in building the political coalition that produced the All Progressives Congress (APC) and later secured its first presidential win.

He argued that he could not publicly dispute Tinubu’s account while serving as a minister under Buhari, noting that doing so would have put his position at risk.

Amaechi stated that he coordinated nationwide mobilisation efforts and worked closely with governors during the campaign period, describing himself as the director-general of Buhari’s 2015 presidential campaign.

He said he travelled across the country to rally support for what he described as a political shift at the time, adding that key stakeholders within the party would confirm his role in the campaign structure.

“When we decided to form the APC… I couldn’t respond because I was a minister under President Buhari,” he said. “Not only was I the DG of the campaign, I led the battles and worked with governors across the country to push for change.”
