A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki as interim National Working Committee chairman has reportedly endorsed former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
The group said Jonathan had been granted an automatic ticket and exempted from the usual screening and nomination processes. Former Niger State governor Babangida Aliyu, speaking for the screening committee, said the decision was intended to position the party as a credible alternative ahead of the next general election.
The announcement, however, should be read carefully. Nigeria?s opposition politics is currently marked by competing blocs, factional claims and attempts by different camps to control party platforms before 2027. An endorsement by one faction does not automatically resolve questions of party legitimacy, recognition by electoral authorities or acceptance by other influential PDP stakeholders.
Jonathan?s name continues to attract attention because of his national profile and his unusual political history. He became president after the death of Umaru Musa Yar?Adua, won election in 2011, and conceded defeat in 2015. Supporters often point to that concession as evidence of democratic temperament, while critics question whether a return would answer Nigeria?s current governance demands.

For the PDP, the bigger issue is whether the party can produce a unified nomination process. If different factions issue conflicting endorsements, the party risks entering the election cycle weakened by litigation and internal distrust. If Jonathan is truly interested in running, he would still need a clear and recognised platform, not merely symbolic support from one camp.
The report also comes amid wider speculation about opposition realignments involving former governors, ex-ministers and presidential hopefuls from multiple parties. As 2027 approaches, endorsements may be used as bargaining tools as much as genuine nomination decisions.
For now, the reported clearance of Jonathan is politically significant but not final. The decisive questions remain: which PDP structure is recognised, whether Jonathan accepts the endorsement, and how other aspirants respond.
