Fifteen worshippers of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Igbala, Eda Oniyo-Ekiti, in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, have regained their freedom after spending 67 days in captivity.
The victims were released late Friday night, bringing an end to more than two months of uncertainty for their families and the community. They arrived in Eda Oniyo around midnight and were taken to a medical facility for evaluation and treatment following their ordeal.
The worshippers were abducted on April 28, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen attacked a church revival programme at the Oke Igbala Prayer Mountain in Eda Oniyo-Ekiti. During the attack, the assailants reportedly opened fire, killing a pastor before abducting 15 worshippers and taking them into the forest.
Confirming the development on Saturday, a community leader said the abductees had been released after weeks in captivity. He also disclosed that one of the victims died while in captivity, describing the loss as a tragic development for the family and the community.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not confirmed the release or provided details on the circumstances surrounding the victims' freedom.
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Ekiti State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful.
