The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse against a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, who is attached to the Headquarters of 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.
Essien has been accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who is deaf and non-speaking, allegedly impregnating her and fathering a child with her while she was living under his family’s care in Taraba State.
According to a report by SaharaReporters, the girl is the younger step-sister of Essien’s wife, Blessing Essien.
In a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, the Nigerian Army said it treats allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, with utmost seriousness.
The Army said it has taken appropriate steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegation.
It cautioned against drawing conclusions about the officer’s culpability while the investigation is ongoing.
“The allegation is currently under investigation, and it would therefore be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability of any individual at this stage,” the Army said.
The military also confirmed that relevant civil authorities are investigating the matter and said it would cooperate fully with them to ensure the case is investigated thoroughly and transparently in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The Army said further developments would be handled in line with the outcome of the investigations.
