A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of deliberately shaping the Electoral Act to undermine opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an NDC aspirants’ summit in Abuja on Saturday, he claimed the legal framework was designed to restrict how political parties select candidates, leaving opposition groups vulnerable to internal disputes.
Galadima said the provisions limiting parties to consensus or direct primaries were intentionally structured to create instability within rival camps.
He also argued that the speed at which the legislation was processed and signed into law suggested prior coordination.
“What were the contents of that bill? One of them which concerns this summit is that you can only generate candidates through two ways. That is, through consensus or through direct primaries,” he said.
He warned opposition parties against relying on direct primaries, insisting they are easily compromised.
“I want to say, without fear of being contradicted, that no political party in the opposition can do direct primaries and come out completely clean,” he added.
Galadima urged opposition groups to prioritize consensus-building and internal unity, saying divisions could weaken their chances in 2027.
