Authorities in western India have arrested a landlord and a tenant over allegations involving sexual exploitation linked to unpaid rent, police said.

The case occurred in Morbi, where a labourer and his family had recently moved for work and were living in rented accommodation. Investigators said the family later faced financial difficulties and fell behind on rent payments.

According to police, the landlord allegedly exploited the situation by demanding sexual acts from the tenant’s wife in exchange for waiving the outstanding rent. Reports indicate that the tenant agreed to the arrangement, after which the abuse reportedly continued.

The situation allegedly escalated when the landlord extended his demands to the couple’s minor daughter. Police said the tenant again complied under pressure, leading to continued abuse of the child.

Investigators added that the victim was taken to several locations, including a property in Tankara, where further abuse allegedly occurred involving other individuals.

The matter came to light after the woman’s maternal grandfather was informed and reported it to authorities. Police subsequently launched an investigation under applicable criminal laws and arrested both the landlord and the tenant.

The tenant has been remanded in custody, while the landlord remains in police detention. Authorities also said a third suspect is still at large and efforts are ongoing to locate him.
