Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has dismissed the state’s Commissioner for Works, Stanley Mbam, months after recalling him from suspension.
The governor announced Mr Mbam’s removal in a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Monday Uzor.
Mr Nwifuru directed the former commissioner to immediately hand over all government property in his possession, including his official vehicle, to the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government.
He was also instructed to transfer his official responsibilities to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works.
The state government did not disclose the reason for the latest dismissal.
The governor, however, said his administration remained focused on effective governance and improving public infrastructure across the state.
Series of disciplinary actions
Mr Mbam’s dismissal marks the third disciplinary action taken against him since he became Works Commissioner under Mr Nwifuru.
On 28 July 2025, he was among about 85 government officials suspended by the governor for allegedly failing to attend an important government function. The officials were recalled about a week later.
On 28 February 2026, Mr Mbam was again suspended indefinitely alongside the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Ogbonnaya Abara.
At the time, the governor cited alleged dereliction of duty, slow project delivery and lapses in the Ministry of Works as reasons for the suspension.
Three days later, Mr Mbam publicly apologised to the governor and appealed for another opportunity to serve.
He accepted responsibility for what he described as “unmet expectations” and asked the governor for a second chance.
On 3 May 2026, Mr Nwifuru recalled Mr Mbam and other suspended officials during a Father’s Day service at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki.
Mr Mbam subsequently resumed his duties as Works Commissioner.
His latest dismissal leaves the Ministry of Works without a substantive commissioner. The Ebonyi State Government has not announced his replacement.
