Abia State Governor Alex Otti has congratulated former Military President Ibrahim Babangida on his 85th birthday, describing him as the “Father of Abia State.”

In a statement issued on Monday, August 17, by his spokesperson, Njoku Ukoha, Otti praised Babangida for the decision to create Abia State on August 27, 1991, during his administration as Head of State.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of Abia State, I heartily congratulate President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on attaining this remarkable age of 85,” Otti said.

The governor said the creation of Abia 35 years ago was a significant decision that has enabled the state to contribute to Nigeria’s development.

Otti also disclosed that the Abia State Executive Council formally congratulated Babangida during its weekly meeting.

According to him, the council recognised Babangida as the “Father of Abia State” and thanked God for sustaining him in good health.

The governor prayed for continued wisdom, strength and peace for the former military leader, as well as more years of service to Nigeria.

Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, turns 85 on August 17, 2026.
