A 41-year-old Nigerian national, identified as Izuchukwu Calistus Odionye, has been arrested in Vietnam after authorities intercepted a shipment containing about two kilograms of suspected crystal methamphetamine and two bricks of suspected heroin.

The drugs were seized at the Lao Bao International Border Gate in central Quảng Trị Province after customs officials detected suspicious items during routine X-ray screening of freight vehicles entering Vietnam from Laos.

According to Vietnamese authorities, the scanning equipment detected unusual profiles inside a consigned package. Officers from the Customs Sub-Department of Region IX subsequently opened the package for inspection.

The narcotics were allegedly concealed inside hollowed-out electric water heaters and electronic equipment components in an attempt to disguise the shipment.

Following the seizure, provincial border guards, customs officials and drug enforcement police launched a controlled delivery operation to identify the intended recipient and trace the shipment's network.

The operation lasted several days as investigators tracked the consignment across multiple provinces. Odionye was eventually arrested in Ho Chi Minh City while taking delivery of the package.

During questioning, authorities said Odionye admitted that the package contained narcotics. He reportedly told investigators that he had been paid to receive the shipment in Ho Chi Minh City and transport it onward to Hanoi.

Vietnamese authorities have continued investigating the case as they seek to identify other individuals involved in the cross-border drug trafficking operation.
