Former Sokoto State governor and senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has withdrawn from the Sokoto South senatorial race on the platform of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the next general election.
Party sources confirmed that the decision followed internal consultations that also affected other senatorial arrangements in the state. As part of the outcome, Tambuwal stepped aside for a former state commissioner, Faruk Malami Yabo, who is now positioned to secure the party’s ticket for Sokoto South.
In a related development, the senator representing Sokoto East, Ibrahim Lamido, also exited the race after what party officials described as a reconciliation process among stakeholders.
The ADC is yet to announce a replacement candidate for the Sokoto East senatorial district following Lamido’s withdrawal.
For Sokoto Central, the party is reportedly leaning toward the member representing Silame-Binji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mani Mainshinku.
The party’s spokesperson in Sokoto State, Lamir Ameen, confirmed the withdrawals, stating that the adjustments were part of efforts to widen participation and open space for younger aspirants.
He said most of the party’s House of Representatives candidates are younger politicians, adding that the restructuring is aimed at strengthening internal inclusion ahead of the elections.
Ameen also urged party members and supporters to maintain unity and coordinate efforts as the party prepares for the upcoming polls.
