Ibrahim Khalil, a political commentator popularly known as Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his home in Gaida, Kano metropolis.

Khalil was reportedly discovered in a pool of blood on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

Amnesty International condemned the killing, describing it as a brutal attack. The rights organisation said Khalil was killed after being overpowered by his attackers.

The organisation called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.

Amnesty International also expressed concern over reports of threats, intimidation and politically related violence ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The organisation said people who openly express political views or criticise those in authority should be protected rather than targeted.

 Governor Orders Investigation

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has directed security agencies to investigate the killing and arrest those responsible.

The governor's spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, said Yusuf described the incident as shocking and unacceptable.

Yusuf ordered the Kano State commands of the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

He also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Khalil's death.

The governor extended his condolences to Khalil's family, friends and associates and urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He assured residents that the state government would continue working with security agencies to protect lives and property across Kano State.
