Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was taken to a hospital on Thursday after he reportedly collapsed during a Democracy Day protest at Unity Fountain in Abuja.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred after police officers moved to disperse demonstrators who had gathered to protest insecurity, economic hardship and governance concerns.

The protest, attended by activists and civil society groups, was disrupted when security personnel fired tear gas canisters into the crowd.

Eyewitnesses said protesters fled the area as tear gas spread across the venue. Sowore was reportedly affected by the gas and later lost consciousness.

Supporters and fellow protesters assisted him and moved him away from the scene. Sources close to the activist said he regained consciousness while being transported from the protest ground.

He was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

The incident added to tensions at the Democracy Day demonstration, where participants gathered to voice concerns over the country's security situation, economic conditions and governance.
