Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there are coordinated efforts by individuals within the ruling establishment to prevent the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from participating in the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the allegation on Monday in Abuja through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to the former vice president, he received what he described as credible information suggesting that moves are underway to keep the ADC off the ballot ahead of the next general election.

"We are fully aware of their plots. While they seek to sow confusion within the opposition, we know their real target is the ADC because it represents the most credible alternative. If the All Progressives Congress (APC) is truly confident in its popularity, why is it so terrified of the ADC?" Atiku said.

He alleged that opposition parties are facing increasing political and legal pressure, claiming that institutions expected to remain neutral are being drawn into partisan activities. He also accused the ruling party of using litigation, administrative actions and political influence to weaken the opposition.

Atiku argued that the focus of the government should be on addressing Nigeria's economic and security challenges rather than political battles.

"At a time when Nigerians are battling hunger, inflation, unemployment, insecurity and declining purchasing power, those entrusted with public office appear preoccupied with political survival rather than national survival," he said.

The former vice president warned that any attempt to stop the ADC from contesting the election would undermine Nigeria's constitutional democracy. He maintained that no government has the authority to decide which political parties Nigerians can vote for.

"The ballot is sacred, and every attempt to tamper with it is an attack on the Republic itself. The desire for change cannot be outlawed. Hope cannot be deregistered. Democracy cannot be subverted by administrative fiat," he stated.

Atiku also called on the judiciary to remain independent and resist political pressure. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, civil society organisations and the international community to remain vigilant against actions capable of affecting the credibility of the electoral process.

He added that Nigerians should remain alert in defending democratic values, insisting that no amount of intimidation or political pressure would weaken the resolve of those supporting the ADC.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the APC, INEC or the Federal Government regarding Atiku's allegations.
