The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old woman, identified as Anulika Onyeanusia, over an alleged case of child sexual abuse and child pornography in Onitsha.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday evening, September 10, following information received by the police through open-source intelligence about a video circulating online.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police said the video allegedly showed a woman sexually abusing a minor.
Following an investigation into the footage, police operatives arrested Onyeanusia and rescued four children aged two, three, six and nine.
The Command said sex toys and other items believed to be relevant to the investigation were recovered from the location.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse and determine whether other people were involved.
The police also said the suspect’s husband was being questioned as part of the investigation to determine whether he had any connection to the alleged offence.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, ordered a thorough investigation and directed that the rescued children receive appropriate care and protection.
The Command said the children’s safety, privacy and wellbeing would remain a priority throughout the investigation and any possible legal proceedings. It added that relevant child-protection authorities and support agencies would be involved to provide counselling and other necessary assistance.
Police said the identities of the children would be protected and that they would be treated with sensitivity given the nature of the allegations.
The Command also acknowledged the contributions of local vigilante operatives, bloggers and residents whose information assisted the investigation.
It urged members of the public to report credible information that could help authorities prevent child abuse and protect vulnerable children.
