Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected any political alliance or parallel structure that could undermine President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general elections.
The position was announced on Monday night by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, after a high-level meeting of APC governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.
Although Uzodimma did not name Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the declaration is expected to heighten attention on the minister’s Rainbow Coalition, which has been building alliances with politicians across party lines ahead of the 2027 elections.
Wike remains a registered member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but has maintained that the coalition is aimed at securing Tinubu’s re-election.
The governors, however, said their support would be limited to candidates contesting under the APC platform.
Uzodimma said the forum had unanimously resolved not to participate in or endorse any alliance capable of weakening the APC or affecting the electoral prospects of its candidates.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.
“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party.
“The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates. All levels of the party campaign architecture will align with the expectations of Mr President and the strategic objectives of the party,” he said.
The governors also pledged to take responsibility for President Tinubu’s re-election campaign in their respective states and to coordinate the party’s campaign structures at state and grassroots levels.
The declaration comes amid growing political activity surrounding the Rainbow Coalition, which has attracted politicians from different parties and generated debate within the APC over its potential impact on the 2027 elections.
Political alignments linked to the coalition have reportedly generated tension in states including Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River, where politicians are weighing their options ahead of the elections.
The APC governors’ position is expected to reinforce the party’s demand for loyalty to its candidates and limit support for candidates contesting under other platforms.
For Wike and his allies, the challenge will be to maintain their coalition’s support for Tinubu while operating outside the formal APC structure.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the competing political structures are likely to become more pronounced as parties and political blocs consolidate their support ahead of the campaigns.
