Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has responded to controversy surrounding an alleged N250 million Hermès handbag reportedly carried by his wife, Margaret.
The luxury item has generated debate online, with some questioning whether it conflicts with Obi’s public image of financial prudence.
Speaking during an interview in Washington, DC, United States, Obi said his wife runs her own business and has independent income.
He said he does not interfere with how she spends her money, provided her personal lifestyle does not affect his handling of public funds.
“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?” Obi said.
He added that he is not aware of the prices of the bags and shoes his wife uses.
“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” he said.
Obi also recalled that his wife was more sophisticated in her lifestyle before he became governor of Anambra State.
The former governor further said he did not establish an office for the First Lady during his tenure, stressing his approach to public office and personal spending.
He also noted that although he does not celebrate his own birthday, he does not prevent others from celebrating him.
The controversy over the alleged handbag has renewed discussions about the spending habits and public image of Nigerian politicians, particularly those who campaign on fiscal responsibility and prudent management of public resources.
