The body of a middle-aged man was discovered on farmland within the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Tuesday, prompting concern among students, staff and residents.
The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report, was found dead with his head missing.
A 300-level student, Pius Atok, said the body was discovered on a farm within the university community on Tuesday morning.
According to him, the victim was not believed to be a student or a member of the university's staff.
A senior university official, who requested anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the incident. The official said preliminary information indicated that the deceased was a farmer known in the area who regularly cultivated crops on the farmland.
The source said the victim was believed to have arrived at the farm early in the morning, as was his routine, adding that the circumstances surrounding the killing remain unclear.
However, the official noted that the nature of the attack suggested the assailants may have specifically targeted the victim before leaving with his head.
The official said the victim's family had been contacted and arrangements were underway to evacuate the body.
The university management has been informed of the incident and is expected to issue an official statement through its Information Directorate.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
