The Osun State Police Command has said the attack involving the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo on Wednesday was linked to an attempt to reach music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.

The incident occurred shortly after the governor received his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo.

Davido, the governor’s nephew, had accompanied him to the INEC office and the monarch’s palace, alongside his children.

According to the police, a suspected member of the Eye Confraternity, identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was stopped by members of his security team.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Osun, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members who allegedly blocked the palace entrance and disrupted the movement of the governor’s convoy.

The development led to an exchange of gunfire between the suspected gang members and security personnel attached to the governor.

Residents around Oja Oba said the shooting caused panic in the area, with gunshots reportedly heard for more than 15 minutes.

The police said a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot during the incident.

Ojelabi said the suspected gang members later left the area and allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan in Osogbo.

Police officers who responded to the report found the victim in a pool of blood and took him to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he was pronounced dead.

The command said it has launched a full-scale investigation and intensified efforts to identify and arrest the suspects.

The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident and assured residents that the police would use all available resources to bring those responsible to justice.

The command also appealed to members of the public with relevant information to contact the nearest police station or the command through its official channels.

The police urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, adding that further updates would be released as the investigation progresses.
