Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, has been cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the Peoples Redemption Party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The party confirmed Duke’s clearance in a statement issued on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq.

Also cleared for the primaries are Dr. Nnaoke Ufere from Abia State and Engr. (Dr.) Yakubu Mohammed Kingsley from Edo State.

According to the statement, the three aspirants agreed to abide by the outcome of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for May 25, 2026.

“The three cleared presidential aspirants of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) have convened and unanimously agreed to submit their aspirations to the will of our party members during upcoming primaries scheduled for Monday, May 25, 2026, across all parts of the country,” the statement said.

The party said the aspirants’ commitment to internal democracy and party unity had strengthened preparations ahead of the primaries.

Ishaq added that the PRP would conduct a transparent and credible process for all contestants.

“We are committed to conducting credible, transparent, and free primaries, involving over 260 aspirants competing for various elective offices, especially in instances where consensus is not achievable,” he stated.

Duke’s participation is expected to attract attention within the opposition space ahead of the 2027 election cycle. He served as governor of Cross River State from 1999 to 2007 and remains one of the prominent political figures from southern Nigeria.

The PRP also reaffirmed its commitment to internal party discipline and democratic procedures, saying the primaries would reflect the choice of party members nationwide.

Nigeria’s next presidential election is expected to hold in January 2027, in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
