An elderly woman, Mrs Affiong Peters, has died after suffering a medical emergency while travelling in a commercial minibus in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Saturday night. The cause of her collapse has not been established.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata.

According to the police, preliminary findings showed that at about 11:30 p.m., the driver of the commercial minibus, Mr John Okon John, reported the incident at Atakpa Police Station.

The driver told police he was conveying eight passengers from Watt Roundabout to the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam axis when one of the passengers requested to stop along Edgerly Road, off William George.

Passengers immediately returned her to the bus and rushed her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), where medical personnel later confirmed her dead.

Police said the deceased's family has been identified and notified. Arrangements are being made to preserve her remains.
