The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Friday in a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora, urging them to use the occasion to reflect on the teachings and values associated with the life of the Prophet.
The minister highlighted compassion, humility and service to humanity as key lessons from the Prophet’s life, saying they remained important to the country at this time.
He also called on Nigerians to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining a peaceful society was a shared responsibility.
Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and show mutual respect and consideration for one another.
He further reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to protecting lives and property and promoting peace and stability across the country.
The minister called on Nigerians to support efforts to strengthen national unity and promote peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths and backgrounds.
He wished Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid ul Mawlid celebration.
