Five people have died in a multiple-vehicle crash on the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred on Thursday near the LNG Plant in Ugwu-Onyeama, Enugu State.
FRSC Route Commander, Theophilus Okoduwa, said the crash involved a Dongfeng trailer, a Mitsubishi L300 commercial bus and a Honda car.
According to him, the accident occurred at about 3:18 p.m. and involved 25 people — 13 males and 12 females.
Okoduwa said 18 people, comprising seven males and 11 females, sustained injuries, while five others — four males and one female — died from the impact.
He said FRSC personnel arrived at the scene about nine minutes after the incident was reported to the sector command at approximately 3:25 p.m.
The injured victims were taken to Tex Hospital at 9th Mile Corner for medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Ekochin Morgue, 9th Mile, after confirmation by medical officials.
“We have diverted traffic and efforts are still ongoing to clear the obstruction caused by the wreckage of the vehicles involved in the multiple crash,” Okoduwa said.
He added that preliminary findings indicated that **wrongful overtaking and speeding** may have contributed to the crash.
FRSC officials are continuing efforts to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow in the affected area.
