Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely recognised as Ghana's tallest man and popularly known as Awuche, has died at the age of 33.

Mr Samed died on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after developing sores on his legs, according to family members.

His death has drawn tributes from many people, particularly in northern Ghana, where his exceptional height made him a well-known figure.

A relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, described him as a kind and generous person.

"Everyone knew how generous and kind he was. From when he died until now, a lot of people are still coming to the house to find out what exactly happened," he said.

Mr Samed was diagnosed with gigantism in his 20s. In 2022, he was measured at 7 feet 4 inches (223 centimetres), earning recognition as Ghana's tallest man.

His family said he will be buried in Tamale instead of his hometown of Gambaga, citing concerns that the village would be unable to accommodate the large number of mourners expected to attend the funeral.
