Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed concern over rising insecurity in the country, suggesting a possible link between the trend and political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He made the remarks on Thursday during the flag-off of a road project in Gombe State. Speaking at the event, he questioned why security challenges tend to intensify during election cycles and warned against what he described as the politicisation of national security.

“Security should not be politicised or turned into a tool. Why does insecurity rise whenever elections approach?” he asked.

Umahi cautioned against actions that lead to loss of life for political advantage, stating that those responsible would ultimately face consequences. “Anyone involved in taking lives under any guise will be held accountable,” he said, adding that such actions would not go unanswered.

He also alleged that some political actors may be exploiting insecurity to gain advantage ahead of 2027, a move he said would be resisted.

Despite the concerns, he assured that the situation would not last indefinitely. He urged support for the current administration and expressed optimism that stability would return, saying the country would overcome its present challenges and progress through the election period.
