Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has cautioned President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing the fate of late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, as a reminder of the role of unforeseen forces in political affairs.
Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said Abacha appeared set to become Nigeria’s civilian president after receiving the backing of all five political parties that supported his transition bid in the late 1990s.
However, he noted that Abacha’s ambition was halted, attributing the outcome to what he described as the “God factor.”
In a post shared on X on Wednesday, August 5, Melaye urged Tinubu not to ignore what he described as divine influence in human affairs.
“Tinubu does not understand this. Abacha was endorsed by all the five political parties at that time. There was no contest; he was already cruising to become a civilian president,” Melaye wrote.
“God picked His phone and called Abacha. When God calls you, there is no network failure. That God has not gone on omugo. Tinubu, watch it.”
Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, had been widely expected by supporters to continue in power through a civilian political arrangement before his sudden death ended those plans.
