At least eight people were killed on Saturday after armed men attacked Abacheke community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
Witness accounts said the attackers invaded a security checkpoint in the area and opened fire, causing multiple fatalities. Some security personnel were reportedly among those killed.
A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the assault lasted several minutes and was followed by arson.
“The attack was directed at the checkpoint. They opened fire and killed about eight people, including a security officer. After that, they burned about six houses,” the source said.
The incident triggered panic across the community, with several residents fleeing their homes amid fears of further violence.
As of the time of reporting, it remained unclear whether the attack was connected to the sit-at-home order linked to Biafra Day observance or if it stemmed from a separate motive.
Police authorities in Imo State had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
