The Labour Party (LP) has named public health expert Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, who said Konto will run alongside the party's presidential candidate, Chibuzo Okereke. Okereke, a governance expert and policy strategist, emerged as the Labour Party's presidential candidate in May.

According to Asogwa, Konto's nomination followed consultations with party stakeholders and reflects the party's focus on competence, integrity and inclusive leadership.

Konto is a public health professional and development practitioner with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, humanitarian work and community development. She previously worked with Catholic Relief Services, where she held several leadership positions before retiring.

During her career, she coordinated health, nutrition, sanitation and humanitarian programmes, particularly in conflict-affected communities across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. Her work involved collaboration with government agencies, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.

The party said her experience in humanitarian response, governance engagement, women's empowerment and community mobilisation, along with her ability to speak English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, makes her well-suited for national leadership.

Asogwa also said the nomination reflects the Labour Party's commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and broad representation.

The Labour Party said the Okereke-Konto ticket will campaign on improving governance, strengthening institutions, enhancing security, reviving the economy and expanding opportunities for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
